Studio Merkmann Shoji Doors

Studio Merkmann hasĀ a wide range of shoji screens from the very traditional to the very complex and modern. Shoji are now integrated into a variety of home styles and serve many different functions. Shoji Doors / Screens can be utilised as room dividers, window and door treatments, internal doors, partitions, cabinets or wall coverings to enhance the sense of spaciousness and light in any room. Their simplicity and natural calming effect on a room has led to many effective applications.

Their flexibility allows for a creative blending of form and function and, as a small ‘hands on’ shop, we can accomodate custom designs and sizing.

The Shoji screen is one of many Japanese architectural elements that have been successfully adopted by the west. In traditional Japanese architecture, a Shoji is a door, window or room divider consisting of translucent paper over a frame of wood which holds together a lattice of wood or bamboo. While washi is the traditional paper, Shoji may be made of paper made by modern manufacturing processes; plastic is also in use.
